External Competitions News - The WCPF Kingswood Salver, 12 Nov 2022
Saturday, 12 Nov 2022 marked a welcome return to prints and a live audience for the Western Counties Photographic Federation Kingswood Salver Competition after two years of digital submissions when the competition was held remotely via Zoom.
The Kingswood is a panel competition – five prints by five different photographers that form a coherent and cohesive panel on a theme of the club’s choice. This year the competition was judged by Adrian and Jane Lines, a well-known couple and highly-experienced judges from the Lancashire & North Cheshire Federation. There was some stunning work amongst an entry of 20 print panels and it was pleasing to see the quality of the prints that clubs have produced as they emerge from a time when print work often took a back seat.
Our panel was “A Little More Conversation”, a street-themed entry with prints by Norman Marsh, Stephen Jones, Val Brierley, Helen Jones and Barbara Jenkins. Our panel received positive feedback but was unplaced amongst so many strong panels. However, Helen Jones received an individual award for “Gossip”, which was highly commended and received a certificate. Congratulations to Bristol who won with a panel of monochrome “Men with Beards” and to runners-up Lincombe Barn “Nature’s Patterns”.
This competition marked the time for Dorchester to return the Kingswood Salver trophy - it had been in our safe-keeping during Covid times after we won the competition in 2019.
At lunchtime, Adrian and Jane filled the prints stands with their recent work and we had time to closely admire their superb prints. Jane’s prints included her panel of Cuban dancers, which won her the coveted Associate of the Welsh Photographic Federation distinction only last week. Adrian also gained his AWPF last week with a panel of very clever self-portraits and he later showed us how he created those. In the afternoon, Adrian and Lane treated us to a masterclass in creative photography “Creative Differences”, with lots of tips on how to create the sort of images that do so well for them.

It was good to return to prints in front of a live audience!
